SAHC was fonded in 1908. Its first building was on a site between the Balai Nobat and the High Court buildings. The High Court building is now known as Galeria Sultan Abdul Halim. In 1911, the College was moved to a building situated in the compund of the present Alor Star Police complex at Jalan Penjara Lama. Adjacent to the General Post Office and Masjid Nagore.
The College started to operate at the present site on January 1st., 1917. The area is 30 acres, in Tanjung Bendahara in the Mukim and District of Kota Star.
From 1908 until 1934 the College was officially known as Government English School. In 1935 it was given the name Sultan Abdul Hamid College.
From only a handful of boys in 1908, the student population has increased significantly to 160 in 1912, 223 in 1917, 470 in 1926, and 1,161 today (as at July 15, 2008). There are now 89 academic and 23 support staff.
There are three official colours of SAHC, Alor Star, namely: Red - the colour of the State of Kedah, as seen in the state flag; Yellow - signifies royalty, the Sultanate of Kedah; Black - represents the durability, strength and excellence and efficiency of the students.
