Tun Dr Mahathir's father, Mohamad bin Iskandar, was the first headmaster of Sultan Abdul Hamid College, from 1908 until 1910. People always mistook his name as Mohd. Iskandar. Iskandar is actually his father's name.
Above a sketch and a photo of a model of the first building of Sultan Abdul Hamid College, Alor Star, in 1908.
A present day photo of the location (of the first building), namely between the Balai Nobat and the High Court Building, near the junction to Jalan Putra as well as in front of the Wisma Negeri (the original Kedah State Secretariat building). The High Court building is now known as Galeria Sultan Abdul Halim.
Above a photo of the second site/location of Sultan Abdul Hamid College, Alor Star, namely along Jalan Penjara Lama. The site is now the back portion of the present day Alor Star Police Station. It is close to the Alor Star General Post Office building and Masjid Nagore. The second site was a private house rented from a person by the name of Ku Baharuddin of Setol (now in Thailand). SAHC operated from that building from 1911 until the end of 1916. The student population had increased significantly from year to year. For example, in 1912, there were 160 boys, made up of 103 Malays, 43 Chinese, 11 Indians and 3 of Siamese origin.
The present SAHC campus was formally declared open on January 1st 1917. The name was changed from Government English School to Sultan Abdul Hamid College in 1935.
